A century-old building, soft jazz music, candlelight
and a table for two.  For me, nothing’s more
romantic.  The fact that the kid at the next table
wasn’t one of ours, made it even better.

My husband and I enjoyed our romantic evening at
Dee Felice Cafe, located in the heart of Covington’s
MainStrasse Village.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have
a chance to linger in the charm of this historical,
Northern Kentucky shopping, dining and
entertainment district.  Bitter cold drove us fast from
the nearby parking lot to the café, but the village’s
many offerings for Mardi Gras and Valentines will
make it worth weathering the winter temperatures
this month.

We dashed to the door, and pulled open the one
beside it, obeying the request to “Please use other
door.”   An electric space heater hummed in the
dark entrance, dimming my first impression.  But
my impression improved when we went through yet
another door.

The hostess greeted us warmly as I admired the
patterned tin ceiling.  She then led us along the
checkered tile floor to our table in a cozy nook.   Our
window seat provided a charming view of the
Mainstrasse streetscape along with a less
charming chill.  I kept my coat on and felt
comfortable and my husband claimed he was fine
without his.

“It’s $5 martini night,” said the hostess.  She raised
her hands in the air and added, “Yea!”

The special rate actually included a variety of
drinks, not just the gin and olive thing I had disliked
when my dad let me taste his martini years ago.
Margaritas, daiquiris and all sorts of sweet martinis
filled the Cocktail Menu.  I considered the Appletini
and the Tootsie Rolltini, but chose the Chocolatini.
Yum.

We looked over the rest of the menu, featuring many New Orleans dishes, but the server’s description of the evening’
s special proved too tempting to resist for either my husband or me: pan-seared filet mignon, topped with roasted
red onion sauce, garnished with Cajun-fried mushrooms.

We relaxed, sampled the sweet bread rolls, and looked through the charming archway at the jazz trio as they set up
their instruments.   Their music began just as our meals arrived.  We found the steaks melt-your-mouth delicious,
but the Cajun mushrooms were unevenly seasoned and strangely chewy.

We finished our meal, but the melodious piano, complimentary bass, and smooth percussion brush strokes made it
impossible to leave.  So we ordered dessert.

I picked the “Boule de Neige,” a delicious ball of fluffy whipped cream and rich chocolate.  My husband ordered the
cheesecake, but sadly, ate most of my dessert after the server said they were out of cheesecake.  He switched to the
Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce, but by the time it arrived, he had eaten too much of my dessert enjoy anymore.
So, when the band went on break, we headed out too, but look forward to visiting more of MainStrass Village soon.
